The Journey Begins Within. Gut Health. A careful look at collagen amino acids, the intestinal barrier and the limits of current evidence.

Onutricia hydrolysed collagen provides amino acids including glycine and proline. These amino acids are found in connective tissues throughout the body, but the effects of a collagen supplement on human digestive conditions are not yet well established.

The gastrointestinal tract is an important immune organ and contains a large proportion of the body's immune cells.3 This does not mean that a collagen supplement can diagnose, prevent or treat an immune or digestive disorder.

What is intestinal permeability?

The intestinal lining regulates what passes from the digestive tract into the body. Increased intestinal permeability is sometimes described informally as "leaky gut", but it is not a single condition that can be diagnosed from general symptoms alone.

Changes in barrier function occur in some gastrointestinal and immune-related conditions.3 Persistent digestive symptoms, suspected food intolerance or unexplained inflammation should be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.

Two laboratory studies using intestinal cell models reported that specific collagen peptides influenced tight-junction proteins and measures of barrier integrity.1-2

These were in vitro studies, not clinical trials in people, and they did not test Onutricia. They therefore provide early mechanistic evidence rather than proof that collagen repairs or seals the human gut.

What the evidence can support

It is reasonable to describe collagen as a source of protein-derived amino acids. It is not yet reasonable to promise that it heals intestinal permeability or treats digestive disease.

Glycine and digestive research

Glycine is abundant in collagen and participates in protein synthesis and several normal metabolic processes.4 A biological role for glycine does not automatically show that additional glycine or collagen produces a particular clinical benefit.

The client-supplied references do not provide human clinical evidence that collagen detoxifies the liver, corrects low stomach acid, prevents anaemia or protects microbiome diversity.

They also do not establish that people following a low-carbohydrate diet specifically need a collagen supplement. Dietary needs depend on total protein intake, food choices, health status and professional advice where appropriate.

Onutricia can be used as a supplementary source of collagen peptides within a balanced diet. It should not replace a varied diet, complete protein sources, prescribed treatment or investigation of ongoing digestive symptoms.

Supporting the gut barrier

01

Barrier under strain

Increased intestinal permeability can allow unwanted substances to move through the gut lining and potentially enter the bloodstream.

02

Proline and glycine

These are characteristic collagen amino acids. Laboratory research has examined how specific collagen peptides interact with intestinal cell-barrier models.1-2
